I can hardly believe it has been ten years since I graduated from Modesto Junior College. It’s definitely not Harvard, it’s not even Stanislaus State. But, I’m a proud alumni, like George Lucas and Jeremy Renner before me.
Two hours south of my hometown of Modesto, Ca., is the city of Fresno. With a population just north of 500,000, it’s colloquially referred to as a “bigger Modesto.” The description is apt, as both cities share an agricultural heritage and both cities have fallen on economic hard times. Forbes has both cities ranked back-to-back as some of America’s Worst Cities For Jobs. And if that weren’t enough, a quick Google search has the neighboring cities on a wide array of unflattering lists. [Read more…]
I love Throwback Thursday. Mostly because I love to reminisce and share pictures of when I used to be fat. Which was basically like 5 years ago. Hooray at no longer being chubby Eric. But perhaps the biggest reason why I enjoy Throwback Thursday, or #tbt as the kids call it, is because it gives me an excuse to share and talk about the music from years gone by. [Read more…]

My co-worker…and co-friend Mark Campos asked me to make him a Hip-Hop 101 list. Mark, besides being incredibly smart, went to art school. So he likes bands that probably don’t exist yet. Making this list could be difficult. On one hand, I’m ecstatic that Mark thinks I’m a cuddly, more personable version of Pandora. But on the other hand, what if I crack under pressure and can’t make him a good playlist? I’ll never be accepted by the art community! [Read more…]
I’m incredibly sad to be missing the San Jose leg of the YEEZUS Tour today. Like any disciple of the YEEZUS Doctrine (tenets include, Love Thyself as Much as Yeezus Loves Himself) I got my tickets the day they went on sale. But sometimes, more urgent and important engagements come up. While I cannot complain, because I’m excited to be heading to Mexico for an important event, I’m nonetheless saddened to miss Kanye.
So I thought I’d share my favorite collabs to atleast keep myself in the Kanye hoopla of this week. Let me know what you think! [Read more…]
“I grew up in a rough part of the city man. And my mom, she really wanted to keep me out of trouble. And music was her way of keeping me in line. So from an early age I had access to instruments and records. And that was really what set up my love for music.”
I had been speaking with Devonne Harris, better known as DJ Harrison for a little over 45 minutes now. But his enthusiasm and love of music was apparent from the beginning of our conversation. [Read more…]
After several listens, I must say that “Yeezus” will do more for Kanye West than “MCHG” will do for Jay-Z. [Read more…]
At halftime of Game 5 of the NBA Finals, Jay-Z debuted a commercial for his new project, “Magna Carta Holy Grail” [Read more…]
I’ve been a HUGE fan of Rapper Big Pooh since his “Little Brother” days when the homie Eddie picked up a copy of “The Minstrel Show” in late 2005. That album served as one of our sound tracks to our various In N Out adventures. Great memories whipping around in the 93 Accord with the dsk kids!
Pooh and LB may have parted ways (but not before serving us such epic records like the mentioned “Minstrel Show” and its predecessor “The Listening”) a few years back, but his solo material contains the same skills and hunger that his Little Brother days showcased.
His music and rhymes has helped me in some of most creative and challenging points of my life. So when he complained on Twitter about horrible traffic, I was more than happy to recommend Waze. Since then we’ve gone back on forth on Twitter and email talking about sports, hip hop, and even Jake Gyllenhaal. He was nice enough to chat with me for a bit and share some insights and stories.
