Yes, I know it’s hard to believe, but beneath the cold, hard outer shell that is Eric Ruiz lies a deep, spiritual and complex man that enjoys the occasional love jam. So, without further ado, here are my top jams that you should be spinning come tomorrow (and forever).
5. Mos Def “Ms. Fat Booty”
Although less of a love song and more of a fling narrative, Mos Def’s classic jam shows just how fast one can fall for someone. And thus the subsequesnt shock of a sudden breakup.
“Shocked as hell, she couldn’t get it together. I just played along and pretended I’ve never met her.”
4. Little Brother “Slow It Down”
One of the best “Grown Man” rap songs I have ever heard. The Little Brother members recount the struggles of love and relationships on their rise to hip hop’s elite.
“Because you’re looking like a woman of virtue, so well rounded no wonder you’re in my circle.
3. Miguel “Adorn”
The Latin crooner scored a HUGE hit with this melody. You’ve all heard it, and I was late to the party, but it’s one of my faves.
2. Nas ft Amy Winehouse “Cherry Wine”
Nas and the late Amy Winehouse exchange desires and hopes for their respective relationships and partners. It’s almost as if they are one another’s perfect match yet somehow keep missing each other.
“She tell me everything is cool when it ain’t looking good. For real, the world so ill. Yo I want a girl so real”
1. Common “The Light”
In my opinion one of the greatest love songs (regardless of genre) of all time. Written on the form of a letter, “The Light” is a testament to Common’s lyrical ability and story-telling skills. Plus the J. Dilla beat adds a nostalgic vibe to this Grammy winning song. I’m no music critic, but this song is perfect. Listen to it. Now.
“Granted we’ve only known each other for some time, it don’t take a whole day to recognize sunshine.”
