“If you live for the weekend, than your shit’s broken.” Gary Vaynerchuck
I’ve always been fascinated by how much we as a society, hate Monday’s. I used to work at a bank and the most common “complaint” on a Monday morning was, you guessed it: “Well it’s Monday.”
My hope is is that you change your opinion on Monday. Think of all the positive things that Monday’s stand for. Monday’s are new a day, which is a blessing all it’s own. Monday’s are a new week, a new beginning, a new opportunity to do what your supposed to do and get after it.
The faster you acclimate yourself to that, the better off you will be. The week wasn’t made to be enjoyed only two days per week. You have seven days a week! If you gripe and complain about Monday or the five weekdays, then you’re missing out on a big chunk of the week. And that’s no way to live.
Anyways, the purpose of this column is to remind you how awesome the first day of the week is. So let’s roll with it
Rise and Grind Jam
“I’ve never really viewed myself as particularly talented. Where I excel is ridiculous, sickening work ethic, you kno? While the other guy’s sleepin, I’m workin. While the other guy’s eatin I’m workin. I have a great time with my life…and I want to share it.”
I first came across BJ The Chicago Kid on Kendrick Lamar’s “Section 80” track “Kush and Corinthians back in 2011. But I didn’t follow up with his individual work.
BJ departs from the traditional hip hop sense. He’s more of the traditional singer-song writer with a crooning voice and range. It was a bit out of my taste for at the time.
His name appeared again and again on various Year End 2012 lists for his latest effort “Pineapple Now-Laters”
Plus he had K.Dot on a track, so naturally I bought the album. Best decision of December. His soulful sounds and free form creativity deliver a wonderful project.
I especially love “Dream II” as it serves as a manual for the dreamers, basically telling them to wake up.
What do you think?
Man Crush of The Week
After a game and comeback like yesterday’s,did you really expect anyone else to win this coveted award? I’m by no means a 49er fan. In fact, as a Raider fan, watching the 49er’s make the Superbowl is the equivalent of being a girl and having a younger, prettier sister that everyone wants to date.
But you gotta love Colin. He’s a hometown hero (Turlock is about 15 minutes south of my hometown of Modesto) and he knows how to lead men. It’s hard not to root for him.
Colin, for your efforts in leading the 49er’s to the Super Bowl, you’ve been awarded Man Crush of the Week.
…still haven’t met Jay-Z. Tune in next week!
Talk Body Language
I never realized how much our body language primes us for confidence and thus success. If you have a few minutes I HIGHLY recommend you watch the video above as Amy Cuddy breaks down confidence and body language.
In the spirit of things, I thought I’d share my own ritual that precedes any meeting or call. I have a playlist on Spotify entitled “Do F*&^%$# Work”. It’s essentially nothing but Rick Ross. Something about da bawse that gets you really pumped up.
While Maybach Music’s finest blares in the background, I like to stretch my arms really really wide and jump around. Every now and then I’ll sneak in a growl, just to keep things interesting.
Sometimes I feel like Ray Lewis getting pumped in the tunnel before a game.
Curious, what do you guys do to prep for big meetings or calls?
Well it’s 8am PST. And this is done. Now, to attack the rest of the day because as Socrates said, “No rest for the hustlah.”
