It’s really unfortunate that the word “pivot” has negative connotations in Silicon Valley. To pivot in the Startup Mecca means to change the direction of your company. It means that what you were doing wasn’t working, so now you must pivot and try something new. Saying your company is going to pivot is to some extent say “LOL we have no idea what we’re doing.”
I however, like and use the term. Albeit in a different manner.
In football (the global one, played with your feet) a Pivot is a midfielder who plays from the deep position. His job is to dictate the flow of the game, and link up with the offensive players to create chances for goals. They have to be creative, smart and involved. Everything runs through him/her. Essentially, a Pivot is the quarterback of football/soccer.
In my experience, some of the most successful people I have met play the Pivot position in everyday life. They are the people who are seemingly everywhere, all the time. Do you have a friend who is often described as “knowing everybody?” That’s a Pivot in action. They are usually very outgoing, have many connections, are in various social circles and are very creative (sound familiar?)
When you’re a Pivot in life opportunity flows to you and through you. Pivots are those individuals who get invited to parties, who get the job offers and who are invited to events. Basically, they are social linchpins. They ironic thing is that they have so much opportunity because they themselves create opportunity for others.
So, how do you become a Pivot? Stay tuned.
